In 1994 “BCC” (Before Computer Care), the same year we were married, Annie said to me “if you’re going to stay up until 3 a.m. with your computer, you might as well make some money at it!” That got me started thinking – I had an abiding interest in computers, so I would stay up until 3 a.m. learning software, programs, hardware, etc. Then I thought – what about people less interested in computers, but who still needed to use them? How are they going to get help? In Vermont we tend to be microbusinesses so we don’t have large staff, much less a dedicated IT person. I wanted to be that resource, so Computer Care was born in 1995.
I always seemed to end up being the “computer guy” in whatever business I was in – the VT National Guard, VT Department of Social Welfare, personnel staffing services, wherever I was working. I particularly remember the enjoyment of the special project in the National Guard where, as a key member, we developed and supported programs that tracked returning equipment after Operation Desert Storm. What a valuable tool computers were!
My bottom line is I really, really love helping folks and this fuels my dedication to supporting others in their businesses. Computer Care can do the IT stuff and you can concentrate on your core business.
Ann writes: “When Ron came to me with the idea for Computer Care, I was a bit scared as I had just received my master’s degree and we were going to be living on just my income as a special education teacher. I could see the enthusiasm in his eyes and I said ok, let’s try it for 6 months. Well, that was nearly 20 years ago. I also have to say I was the one who came up with the name Computer Care (a bit proud, am I?).
I had been in business before as a salesperson, field technician, librarian, a freelance bookkeeper and an office manager, as well as PTA president and homemaker for 18 years, so the administrative side came easy to me. I initially worked part time in the business for 8 years and found my organization skills were very handy. So much so, that I now am responsible for the “admin” and marketing side of the business.”
